About the role

We are looking for an Animal Attendant Team Leader to join our vibrant team in a full-time role, working across our North Melbourne and Cranbourne shelters. In this role, you will lead, coach, and train our dedicated animal attendants, ensuring the highest standards of care. This position requires regular travel between the two sites, making it an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in animal husbandry and welfare to bring their leadership skills to a varied and hands-on operational role.

Reporting to the Shelter Operations Manager, the Animal Attendant Team Leader will uphold the highest standards of animal welfare by ensuring all shelter activities are conducted in alignment with established policies and procedures. Team Leaders will support and guide Animal Attendants in their daily care of the animals, fostering a positive and compassionate environment.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Plan, monitor and supervise the daily activities of the team
  • Provide feedback, coaching and training to the animal attendants
  • Assisting with rostering and submitting fortnight timesheets
  • General husbandry of animals, identifying & reporting animals that are ill or have behavioural problems to the veterinary team
  • Ensure animal development outcomes are achieved
  • Liaising with the public and council officers – assisting with enquiries and finding lost animals
  • Provide guidance and assistance to volunteers and work experience students 

About you

We are looking for someone who possesses strong leadership skills, someone who is excited about process improvement and developing others. You will thrive off working in a fast-paced environment and be willing to be work in a very hands on leadership role.

To be successful in this role, you will also have;

  • Certificate II (or higher) in Animal Studies or equivalent experience (essential)
  • Proven knowledge of safe animal handling, feeding plans, and administering prescribed animal medications
  • Experience in a supervisory or leadership role (essential)
  • Ability to remain composed under pressure, maintaining focus and energy in challenging situations.
  • Advanced understanding of relevant legislation, regulations, and codes relating to shelters (desirable)
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Problem-solving ability, with a practical approach to identifying solutions
  • Flexibility to work on a rotating roster, including weekends and public holidays
  • Valid driver’s licence (essential)
