About Us

The Lost Dogs’ Home cares for around 15,000 lost and abandoned dogs and cats every year and is Australia’s largest animal shelter. We provide a wide range of animal welfare and community programs and services.  We are a voice for Australia’s unwanted, stray, and lost dogs and cats.  The Lost Dogs’ Home plays a crucial role in the promotion of responsible pet ownership programs and we are a leader in our community helping re-home abandoned and stray animals with our successful foster and adoption programs.
  
The Role

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the financial accountant is primarily responsible for the management of the financial record keeping of the Lost Dogs’ Home. Working within a small team of six, you will take ownership of our accounts, providing high quality financial services and have the flexibility to occasionally assist team members with payroll and the processing of accounts payable and receivable.

The key responsibilities of this role are:

  • Preparation and processing of transactions into the general ledger
  • General ledger reconciliations
  • Reconciliation of accrual accounts monthly
  • Oversight and management of the fixed asset register
  • Assist in the preparation of annual financial statements
  • Assist in maintaining the Lost Dogs’ Home finance system, including responsibility for maintaining the chart of accounts
  • Prepare monthly cashflow reports in an accurate and timely manner
  • Monitor cash flow and cash management activities.
  • Prepare ad-hoc reports and contribute to Finance team projects as required
  • Ensure that internal controls are documented and are operating to ensure compliance with sound accounting practices.
  • Develop and document appropriate policies and procedures regarding the financial management of the organisation.
  • Reconcile, report, and pay all obligations, including BAS and FBT, in line with statutory requirements

 You will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting or relevant discipline, and CA/CPA qualification
  • 5+ years in an accounting role
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Solutions focused, with strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Strong systems background/knowledge of enterprise finance systems (TechnologyOne experience preferred)
  • Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • High level of accountability with the ability to prioritise and manage deadlines
